By using a soft starter connected in series between the power supply and the controlled motor, the conduction angle of the internal thyristor is controlled, so that the input voltage of the motor gradually increases from zero in a preset functional relationship until the start is completed, and the motor is given full voltage, which is called soft start. According to the different needs of different industries, there are also different requirements for the starting method of soft starters. Generally, there are several methods: ramp boosting soft start. This starting method is simple and does not have current closed-loop control. It only adjusts the conduction angle of the thyristor to increase it in a certain functional relationship with time. Its disadvantage is that due to the lack of current limitation, during the motor starting process, sometimes a large surge current is generated, causing damage to the thyristor and having a significant impact on the power grid, which is rarely applied in practice.
Repair case (1): An imported CNC lathe (Siemens 810D system) showed an error message “NC and PLC cannot be connected” on the screen after starting up. After opening the electrical cabinet, it was found that the indicator lights and digital tubes on the power module and NCU module were not displayed. However, the voltage at the incoming end of the power module was measured by a multimeter to be 395V. Therefore, it was determined that the fault was caused by a high incoming voltage, which led to a problem with the internal power circuit of the power module. After opening the module and inspecting the internal power supply, it was found that a high-power field-effect transistor was burnt out. The damaged components were replaced, and the power grid voltage of the factory room was adjusted to 380V before restarting. The system started up normally. (2) An imported CNC spinning machine (Siemens 840D system) does not start hydraulically after startup. After analysis, it was found that the hydraulic starting circuit is connected in series to terminals 113 and 63 of the power module. Under normal conditions, 24V voltage is generated on 113 after startup. Through the hydraulic circuit, 24V voltage will also appear on the pulse enable terminal 63, and the power module will start working normally. In the fault state, when measuring the terminals of the power module, it was found that 9 had 24V generated while 113 did not, indicating that there was no fault in the internal power circuit of the power module. The problem was with the internal main contactor. When the power module was opened and the normally closed contact of the main contactor was tested, it was found that the contact resistance was nearly 15k. After grinding the contact, the hydraulic system was restarted and the fault was eliminated.
