Xycom 70100-001

Xycom 70100-001 is a VME-bus XVME-100 Memory Module (also known as an EEPROM Memory Module) from the Xycom series. It is a single-height (6U) VME card designed to provide programmable RAM, EPROM, EEPROM, or mask ROM within VME-bus systems, supporting up to approximately 1 MB of memory devices.

Key Features

Compatibility:
Compliant with VME-bus (16-bit/32-bit) standards and can be directly inserted into a 6U VME slot.

Memory Capacity:
Supports up to 1 MB of memory, with optional RAM/EPROM/EEPROM capacities such as 8 KB, 64 KB, 256 KB, and 1 MB.

Configurable Design:
On-board jumpers (J-series) allow configuration of memory type, base address, access speed (100 ns to 250 ns), and backup power mode (battery or +5 V standby) for each memory bank.

Power Monitoring:
Built-in power-sense circuitry automatically disables memory when VME supply voltage drops below 4.75 V, preventing data corruption.

Backup Power:
Supports external batteries or a +5 V standby supply to retain data during power loss.

Mechanical Dimensions:
Single-height 6U form factor (approx. 160 mm × 100 mm), weight about 1 kg.

Typical Applications

  • Firmware or parameter storage for industrial automation control systems
  • Embedded VME computers or I/O modules requiring reliable non-volatile memory
  • Program loading media for programmable logic or DSPs in VME-based systems

Usage Notes

VME Rack Installation:
Insert the XVME-100 into an empty 6U slot and configure the required memory capacity and base address using the jumpers.

Power & Backup:
Check jumpers J34/J35 to select between battery backup and +5 V standby power.

Address Mapping:
Ensure the configured base address and address modifier do not conflict with the host system’s VME address space.

Memory Device Installation:
Insert the selected RAM/EPROM/EEPROM chips into the corresponding 32-pin sockets and ensure proper seating.

In summary, the Xycom 70100-001 (XVME-100) is a flexible and configurable VME-bus memory module suitable for industrial control and embedded systems that require reliable and programmable non-volatile memory.

What is DCS?

A Distributed Control System (DCS) is a computer-based system used to automate, monitor and control complex industrial processes. It is essentially a large network of controllers that are distributed throughout a plant or facility, all working together to keep the process running smoothly.

Here’s a breakdown of how a DCS system works:

  1. Sensors:These devices collect data from the physical process, such as temperature, pressure, flow rate, and level.
  2. Controllers:These are programmable devices that receive data from the sensors and send control signals to actuators.
  3. Actuators:These devices take physical action based on the signals they receive from the controllers, such as opening or closing valves, starting or stopping pumps, or adjusting heater settings.
  4. Operator stations:These are the human-machine interfaces (HMI) that allow operators to monitor the process, make changes to setpoints, and troubleshoot problems.
  5. Communication network:This network connects all of the devices in the DCS system together, allowing them to share data and control signals.
